Once thought to be the fabled “Shangri-La”, Kathmandu day Tour remains one of the most desired destinations in the world. Also called the ‘City of Temples’, Kathmandu is at the center of Nepal’s art, culture, history, and economy. Kathmandu Day Tour explores this very city and takes you to the UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city. Although the history of the city goes back centuries, the native Newar community has largely influenced the tradition, architecture, art, and culture of the city.
You’ll get to visit four of the eleven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. Kathmandu Day tour begins with the visitto Kathmandu Durbar Square, a large palace square with the 10th Century palace, numerous Hindu temples, and courtyards. Formerly the royal seat of Malla Kingdom, it was also used by Shah Kings. You’ll witness the museum-turned palace, age-old temples, and cultural monuments around the square before driving east to the religious site of Pashupatinath. It is home to a large Hindu temple of Lord Shiva and also a popular pilgrimage site which brings in thousands of Hindu pilgrims from South Asia every year. Afterward, you’ll drive 2.4km northeast towards Boudhanath. Boudhanath is home to the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal situated in the Tibetan inhabited town of Boudha. The tour ends with a scenic visit to another religious site of Swayambhunath. It an ancient religious architecture located atop a hill in the center of the city. You’ll get to climb the 365 stone steps heading all the way towards Swayambhunath Stupa, numerous Hindu temples and Buddhist monuments along with the majestic panorama of Kathmandu city. Kathmandu Day Tour can be undertaken anytime during the year. AM: Kathmandu Durbar Square
The tour begins with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kathmandu Durbar Square. Lying at the heart of the city, the royal palace square is also known as the Hanuman Dhoka among the locals. Meanwhile, you’ll also get to witness Kumari Ghar at the center of the square. Kumari Ghar is used as the residence by the living goddess Kumari. Another major attraction of the palace square is the large relic of Kala Bhairava. Although the palace square boasts numerous temples, monuments, and a palace, the place is highly regarded for age-old architecture, local Newari art, aesthetic alleyways, shops, and the crowd. The tour moves 5km east of Kathmandu Durbar Square to the holy site of Pashupatinath
The term Pashupatinath translates to The Lord of All Creatures. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, a Hindu deity, the large temple with the intricate stone complex is built on the banks of Bagmati River. The Hindu festival of Shivaratri is held on the temple premise every year, which brings in over 200,000 visitors. Another major attraction in the area is the Hindu crematory ground which is extensively used by the Hindus in the city. You’ll also get to see the hordes of macaque (monkeys) invading the temple premise which will be a sight to see. Afterward, you’ll drive 2.4 km northeast to the Buddhist site of Boudhanath.
Also known as Khasa Chaityas, Boudhanath is an ancient Buddhist stupa located in the populous town of Boudha. The large spherical stupa of Boudhanath boasts a height of 38 meters. Although there are varying accounts of the origin of the stupa, the locals attest that the stupa entombs the remains of Kassapa Buddha. Pilgrims visit the stupa on a daily basis to perform circumambulation. Surrounded by shops, diners, and houses from all sides, you will have to push the crowd to get a good sight of the stupa. The tour ends with a brief visit to Swayambhunath.
Swayambhunath is an ancient religious architecture located atop the hill at the heart of the city. The site can be accessed either through the 365 stone staircase at the front or the short drivable road at the back. The religious complex consists of a large Buddhist stupa, numerous shrines, and temples. The site is also known as Monkey Temple for the abundance of macaque and rhesus monkeys found in the complex and the nearby forests. The stupa is also a vantage point to observe the panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding landscapes.
After visiting Swayambhunath and enjoying the majestic panorama of Kathmandu city from the top, you’ll drive back to the hotel. In the evening, one of our representatives will take you for a dinner hosted by Ace Vision Treks.
