Mera Peak climbing is a trophy among all the peaks below 6,500 meters in Nepal. Climbing the highest trekking peak in the country offers a great opportunity to enjoy the wonderful vistas of Himalayas. Mera Peak Climbing requires one to trek through the traditional Sherpa villages and Makalu Barun National Park to reach the pristine Mera Peak. The peak climbing trip is more than just an arduous climb but incorporates trekking in the company of the majestic Himalayas of Everest and Makalu ranges.
The 18-day Mera Peak Climbing trip begins upon your arrival at Kathmandu. After the initial preparation of the trip, you’ll embark on a sightseeing tour of the historical Kathmandu city and witness some of the pristine UNESCO World Heritage Sites. An early morning flight will take you to Lukla, the gateway of Everest, from where you’ll begin trekking towards Mera Peak (6461m). Instead of taking the popular Everest trail, you’ll continue eastward towards Paiya village. The forested trail will take you to the traditional Sherpa village of Panggom, Ningsow, and ChhetraKhola before arriving at Makalu Barun National Park.Makalu (8463m), Chamlang (7321m), and Baruntse (7219m) peaks lie inside the park. You’ll continue north and cross Kothe, Thangnak, and Khare village before arriving at Mera Peak Base Camp. From here, you’ll ascend the peak and arrive at Mera Peak High Camp from where you’ll make an attempt for the summit. The Mera Peak summit offers a great panorama of the valley including the majestic sight of mountains like Everest (8848m), Cho Oyu (8188m), Makalu (8463m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Nuptse (7861m), and Baruntse (7219m). Here on, it’s a continuous descent until Lukla. En route, you’ll pass through Kothe and ThuliKharka village before crossing the Zatrwa La Pass (4610m) to reach Lukla. Mera Peak Climbing is mostly accessible during spring (Mar-Jun) and autumn (Sep-Nov) seasons.

You’ll discuss with your guide and prepare for the upcoming trek. He’ll assess your health, trek gears and clothing, and prepare the TIMS Card and climbing permit. In the meantime, you’ll embark on a sightseeing tour of the historical Kathmandu city. With the company of a tour guide, you will embark on a cultural exploration of the world heritage sites in Kathmandu. Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square are the major destinations for the day. If time permits, you'll visit a few more tourist destinations around Kathmandu. You’ll catch an early morning flight to Lukla. The 35-40min flight will take 140km northeast of Kathmandu to the Lukla Airport from where you’ll begin the trek. Lukla, a tiny Sherpa village, serves as the gateway to the Everest region. The trek heads south and gradually descend to Surke village. Crossing Chutok La Pass (2945m), you move to Paiya. Overnight stay at Paiya.
The second day of the trek begins with a brief descent. You’ll cross a suspension bridge and trek through the slippery trail towards Kari La Pass (3145m). After crossing the pass, you’ll continue trekking through the lush rhododendron and bamboo forests. After a brief trek through the Dudh Koshi Valley, you’ll arrive at Panggom.The inhabitants of Panggom Village largely depend on farming and trading. Overnight stay atPanggom.
After breakfast, you’ll head out of Panggom and cross the Panggom La Pass (3174m). A brief ascent, you’ll complete it within a short time and head north towards PesengKharkaKhola. After crossing the mighty river, you’ll reach PesengKharkaDanda. Brief trekking through the ridges will bring you toNingsow Khola. Just to the other side of the stream lies Ningsow Village. Overnight stay at Ningsow.
From Ningsow the trail advances through some uneven path towardRamailoDanda. From the vantage point of RamailoDanda, you can enjoy the extraordinary sights of Mera Peak (6461m) and Salpa Danda. After brief trekking, you’ll reach Makalu Barun National Park and cross the Pasang Lhamu trail towards ChhatraKhola. If you’re lucky, you can spot a Red Panda in the woods. Overnight stay at ChhetraKhola.
After heading out of ChhetraKhola, you’ll trek north on the main trail to Mera Peak (6461m).The scenic setting of the national park will offer a great time. You’ll arrive atMajangKhola, from where another trail moves alongside the HinkuKhola. You’ll continue heading straight towards Tashing Ongma and cross the bridge over the SanuKholato reachKothe. Overnight stay at Kothe.
You’ll continue trekking along the ridge of the HinkuKholalying on the foothills of Mera Peak (6461m). After a brief stop at Gordishung, cattle herders' settlement during summer,you’ll pass the 200-year-old LungsumgbaGompa and trek until you arrive at Thangnak. Thangnak has few lodges and shops to cater the tourists. Overnight stay at Thangnak.
You’ll follow the lateral moraine of Dig Glacier towards Dig Kharka which offers a mesmerizing view ofCharpateHimal. The trail then climbs through moraines to the top-ridge of HinkuNup and Shar glaciers. A brief ascent from HinkuNup will bring you directly toKhare. From Khare, you can enjoy the north face ofMera Peak up-close. Overnight stay at Khare.
Today, you’ll spend time acclimatizing at Khare overlooking the Mera Glacier. You’ll use the spare time to prepare for the climb. Your climb guide will assist you with basic training and handling to climb gear and tools like the ice-ax, harness, ascender, climbing boots, and crampons, along with the usage of the rope during climbing. You can also explore the nearby surroundings to witness exquisite Himalayan views.Overnight stay at Khare.
It will follow a lengthy trek to the High Camp of Mera Peak. You’ll walk through a boulder-strewn steep trail and continue further through the Mera La Pass (5415m) towardsMera High Camp. You’ll cross a rocky and snowy trail, and many crevasses en route to high camp. You’ll stop at a large rock marked by a large cairn and set up a high camp while enjoying the beautiful sights of the majestic peaks like Mt. Everest (8848m), Makalu (8463m), Cho Oyu (8188m), and Lhotse (8414m). Overnight stay at Mera High Camp.
It is a special day as you climb the summit of Mera Peak. You’ll wake up before the break of dawn, and have your breakfast. Afterward, you’ll prepare for the climb.Led by your climb guide, you’ll ascend using the crampons and head slowly towards the summit. The climb steepens for a section behind the ridge which brings you closer to the summit. The summit of Mera Peak offers a spectacular panorama of the Khumbu valley along with the majestic views of the Everest (8,848m), Cho-Oyu (8,188m), Lhotse (8,414m), Makalu (8,463m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Nuptse (7,861m),Baruntse (7 ,129m), and few other peaks. You’ll retrace your path and climb down the same way back to the High Camp and later to Khare. Overnight stay at Khare.
The descent will be easier as you trek down fromKhare to Kothe village. Retracing your steps, you pass Dig Kharka and head towards the edge of Sabai Tsho Lake. Further descending, the trek heads to Thangnak followed by Gordishung and Mosom Kharka to reach Kothe. You can celebrate the success of the climb at Kothe with local and Yak-cheese. Overnight stay at Kothe.
The trail follows the uneven path and crossing of the several tributaries of the InkhuKhola before arriving atTaktho. You’ll head right and continue trekking until ThuliKharka. En route to ThuliKharka, you’ll pass through Buddhist Chortens. The surrounding hills and mountains in the skyline will keep you company as you make a final climb to Thuli Kharka.Overnight stay at ThuliKharka.
You’ll leave Thuli Kharka and ascend towards Zatrwa La Pass (4610m). Although challenging, the views atop the pass are sublime and provide the zeal to trek further. After crossing the pass you’ll be welcomed by the beautiful sight of Lukla with the scenic background containing Cho Oyu, Kongde Peak, NumburHimal, and KusumKhangkaru ranges. You’ll arrive atLukla viaChutangand rest. Overnight stay at Lukla.
Today, you’ll catch your flight back to Kathmandu. Having said your goodbyes to the incredible Himalayan realm, you get on a scenic flight and reach Kathmandu. Upon arrival, our representative will receive you and bring yours to your hotel. Later, you can explore the city which offers a bit of cultural predominance and hints of modernity. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
A reserve day is kept to ensure that you do not miss your flight back to Kathmandu in case of flight delay or cancellation due to bad weather. However, if you do not come across such events, Kathmandu is always ready for sightseeing. The durbar squares in Bhaktapur and Patan offer insight into medieval art and culture whereas destinations like Phulchowki, Godavari, and Chandragiri have natural opulence on offer. Today, being the final day of your trip, our representative will drop you off the airport. After bidding goodbyes with your peak climbing comrades and guides, you will head to the airport and get on a scheduled flight to your destination.
