The region was opened for tourists as recent as 1992; however, a trekker is required to obtain a special permit before entering the region. The trek traverses through the monasteries of the Bon religion that predates modern-day Buddhism. Enjoy the scenic trek into one of the rain-shadow areas of Nepal.

The 17-day Upper Mustang Trek commences upon your arrival at Kathmandu. Accompanied by an experienced tour guide, you indulge in an exploration of a few UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square before embarking on a 200km road journey west to Pokhara city. A short trans-Himalayan flight will take you to Jomsom city from where you’ll begin the trip to Upper Mustang Trek. The arid and desert-like landscape will accompany you throughout the trail. Due to its acute geographic location, Mustang receives less or none rainfall throughout the year making it a rain-shadow area. You begin trekking through the Kali Gandaki valley and move northward through the quaint villages of Kagbeni, Chele, Syanbochen, and Tsarang before entering Lo Manthang or the ‘walled city’. Lo Manthang was formerly the capital of Mustang which is protected by walls on all sides. Due to its close proximity to Tibet in the north, the greater lifestyle, culture, and tradition of the region resembles that of Tibet. You’ll explore the northern territories of Upper Mustang including Niphu, Garphu and Ghar Gumba before retracing your path back to Jomsom via Dhakmar, Ghiling, Samar, and Kagbeni villages. The trek offers a wonderful panorama of Annapurna I (8091m) and Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m). A short flight from Jomsom will bring you back to Pokhara. The trip concedes upon your arrival at Kathmandu.
