The 8-Day Buddhist Pilgrimage tour commences at Kathmandu –the melting pot of cultures. The history of Buddhism in Nepal can be traced to the arrival of Emperor Ashoka.  We are believed to have established four stupas inside Kathmandu Valley which marked the initiation of Buddhism in Kathmandu. The advent of the Lichhavi Kingdom (400-750) saw the rise of Buddhist adherents. Today, Newar Buddhists account for the most number of Buddhist adherents in the valley followed by Tibetan Buddhists.

You’ll embark on a cultural tour of the city and drive up to Namobuddha via Dhulikhel. Namobuddha is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. Afterward, you’ll pay a visit to the UNESCO-designated sites of Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath, and explore the tourist sites of Kapan Monastery and White Gumba (Druk Amitabh Monastery).

The tour advances to the southwest Terai region of Nepal.  Where you’ll visit Lumbini and explore the exact birth site of Gautam Buddha. Today, you’ll embark on the first leg of the cultural tour. You’ll drive southeast from your hotel to Namobuddha. The scenic drive will take you through the Araniko Highway passing the colorful towns of Bhaktapur and Dhulikhel, en route. The place is popular for the folktale of a prince who gave away his body to the starving tigress and her cubs. You can explore the religious site and also enjoy the majestic panorama of mountains from Namobuddha. Overnight stay at Namobuddha.

You’ll drive back to Kathmandu city through the same path and take a detour to visit the Boudhanath Stupa. Boudhanath stupa lies east in the populous city of Kathmandu. You can witness the largest Buddhist stupa in the country along with rich and traditional shops, monasteries, and Buddhist adherents circumambulating the stupa. Afterward, you’ll drive further east and visit the majestic Kapan Monastery lying on a hilltop. Today, you’ll pay a visit to another popular Buddhist pilgrimage and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Swayambhunath. Located atop a hill in the center of Kathmandu city, Swayambhunath is one of the oldest Buddhist stupas. The site is also home to shrines and temples dating to 400 AD. Afterward, you will drive northwest to another Buddhist site White Monastery. Lying atop the Nagarjun Hill, the monastery is painted in all white color. Today, you’ll depart early and drive 260km southwest to the religious site of Lumbini. Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage site also popular for being the birthplace of Gautam Buddha. You’ll drive through Prithvi Highway and East-West Highway all the way to the Rupandehi district. You’ll pass through the popular towns of Bharatpur, Kawasaki, and Ramnagar en route. Lumbini is considered one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nepal and sees the inflow of thousands of Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims. Overnight stay at Lumbini.

You’ll indulge in a complete sightseeing tour of Lumbini today. The tour begins with a visit to the ancient site of Maya Devi Temple. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Maya Devi Temple is home to the birth site of Gautam Buddha. The temple stands adjacent to a sacred pond and a garden. The site was visited by Emperor Ashoka in 3rd BCE who also built the popular Ashoka Pillar in the temple’s vicinity. Today, you’ll retrace your path and drive back to Kathmandu. You’ll drive along the plains and lush tropical forests of Terai. The path takes a detour and goes north to Prithvi Highway through Bharatpur. You’ll continue driving through Prithvi Highway until Kathmandu. Once at Kathmandu, you’ll be escorted to your hotel.
