The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek might be challenging, but you will definitely find it worth it once you arrive at the majestic foot of the world's third highest mountain, Mount Kanchenjunga. Alongside the India-Nepal border in far-off northeast Nepal, this trek takes you through diverse terrain ranging from subtropical jungle to alpine meadows which supplements your experience of wilderness in all its intensity.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking is a complete off the beaten track adventure. The inaccessibility of the region renders this trek a hidden gem in the Himalayas. The journey provides spectacular views of the mighty Kanchenjunga and its neighboring peaks like Jannu (Kumbhakarna), Lhotse, Makalu and more.

As you climb higher, you will encounter high altitude meadows, ancient monasteries with fluttering prayer flags, rugged fields with rock boulders and glacier valleys. The nature around you continues to change all the time, offering a new, exciting landscape.

Taking approximately 18-20 days to complete, the trek offers a wonderful sense of isolation. It is less crowded compared to other significant trekking trails like Everest or Annapurna which allow you to connect with nature and culture of the region in a deeper sense.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is absolutely worth doing for people who want to experience the authentic wilderness. It is the best adventure for experienced trekkers desiring to venture out and explore a lesser visited, remote corner of the Nepal mountains.

Although this trek requires proper planning and preparation, mostly on account of remote mountainous terrains and high altitudes, the benefits far outweigh the challenges. The experience itself is an ultimate blend of isolation, spectacular scenery and rich cultural experience, making it among the most rewarding treks in Nepal.

                Trek Duration: 4 hours

Following a mouthwatering breakfast in the picturesque village of Ghunsa, we begin on the trail towards Kambachen. We walk past remote Tibetan influenced settlements and dense forests full of biodiversity.

According to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek map, the trail ascends gradually up the southern side of the Ghunsa Khola, shaded by tall rhododendron, juniper and pine trees. The trek continues across Rampuk Kharka, a small alpine meadow often dotted by yak herds in summer. The trail becomes steeper as it follows the edge of the Kumbhakarna Glacier and eventually, after a few hours of steady trekking, you will reach Khambachen. Hike Duration: 5-6 hours

The remote Himalayan village of Khambachen is a significant point for acclimatization prior to going higher up the valley. Its serenity and stunning view of the high mountains make it an ideal place to rest, acclimatize and soak in the raw beauty of the Kanchenjunga region.

To help with good acclimatization before venturing further into high-altitude terrain, we have a rest day at Kambachen. Though technically a rest day, we use it for an active acclimatization climb, a proven technique of giving the body time to acclimatize to the thin air. One of the most rewarding side excursions out of Kambachen is the journey to Jannu Base Camp.

The hike begins with a moderate ascent through glacial outwash plains and rock meadows. Ascending higher, the view becomes increasingly more breathtaking with the giant north face of Mount Jannu rising before us. At 7,710 meters, Jannu is one of the most mythic mountains of the eastern Himalayas and is locally considered sacred.

Spending some time in the base camp, taking in the majestic view and breathing in fresh air, return to Kambachen in the evening for a stay in cozy teahouses.

The scenery becomes more striking with snow covered mountains and wild terrain. You will proceed along the way through yak grasslands of rocky moraine and alpine grass. The trail from here goes through rocky boulders, deeper into the wilderness.

On the way, you will also walk across the Ramtang Monastery which is a wonderful place to unwind and meditate. You will reach Lhonak with the west face of Kanchenjunga and north of Jannu. With a secluded and serene setting, Lhonak is a good place to rest and sleep amid the grandeur of the high Himalayas.

                      Trek Duration: 8 hours

We are on day 11 of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek Itinerary. We depart Lhonak in the early morning for Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. The trail takes you in an easterly direction along the moraines of Lhonak Glacier. The terrain is rough and diversified with loose boulders, glaciers and patches of ice requiring attention and endurance.

As we proceed, the path gradually ascends and takes us over the treeline into a broad valley. The scattering of multi-hued alpine flowers provides a charming contrast to the stony, barren land. We move further, traversing ice lakes and glacial creeks and arrive at the vast Kanchenjunga Glacier.

At 5,143 meters, the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp presents a mesmerising view of glistening glaciers, windswept valleys and snow-hooded mountains. It is a moment of deep awe and profound satisfaction after all the trouble it has taken to reach this place.

After basking in the scenery of the base camp, we make our way down to Lhonak where a second blissful night is spent surrounded by the magnificence of the Himalayas.

                        Ghunsa Elevation: 3,595 meters/11,794 feet

                        Trek Duration: 7 hours

Waking up in Lhonak, we begin descending to Ghunsa once more. We will follow the trail that leads us steadily downward through familiar landscapes, which appear equally beautiful when seen from a different angle and perspective.

We come across Kambachen once more, traverse glacial streams, rocky meadows and the open alpine valley with extensive Himalayan views. With the altitude coming down, each step is easier and you can fully enjoy the views that may have been missed while going up.

The descent resumes below treeline again where juniper, pine and rhododendron forest welcome us back in their serene shade. The sound of the Ghunsa Khola gets louder as we approach its sandy banks. We will walk past Ramtang Monastery and cross Yak pastures and finally arrive at Ghunsa.

After a long day in the frozen wilderness, Ghunsa's warm hospitality, fluttering prayer flags and cozy lodges provide you with a most welcome rest.

                          Trek Duration: 5-6 hours

The trek from Ghunsa to Selelle is less frequented and is more wilderness providing an actual sense of adventure in the high Himalayas. We will leave behind Ghaunsa and follow a gradual climb through pine and rhododendron forests towards the destination. On each step you take, the terrain changes to alpine, windswept slopes and rocky outcrops.

The trail gradually ascends you towards the Sele La Pass from where you are rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the Jannu, Makalu, Kanchenjunga and many other surrounding mountains. You will then descend to Selele, a small seasonal settlement amidst isolated hills. The trail has icy patches or snow depending on the season, so caution is needed during the descent.

Today's trek is strenuous but immensely rewarding, connecting the northern and southern valleys of the Kanchenjunga Himal and giving a deep sense of connection with the stark, untouched beauty of the Himalayas.

Sinion La Elevation: 4,440 meters/14,566 feet

                            Trek Duration: 6-8 hours

Leaving behind Selele, we have a stunning and demanding day of trekking ahead of us as we cross the high Sinion La Pass to Tseram, a small village in the southern Kanchenjunga Valley.

The day begins with a steep, steady ascent through barren alpine terrain. As we climb higher, we cross a series of wind swept ridges with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. We will gradually ascend towards Sinion La Pass which treats you to the stunning views of Mount Kanchenjunga, Jannu, Makalu and even Everest on the far horizon.

The route then goes downhill through rocky fields and wide alpine slopes. The air becomes slightly thicker and the distant gurgle of streams and the soft crunch of dwarf rhododendron bushes lead you into the valley where Tseram is located.

Tseram is a secluded stopover with steep cliffs and dense forests, which is the gateway to Kanchenjunga's southern base camp and Oktang's glacial landscapes.

Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Elevation: 4,610 meters/15,124 feet

                              Trek Duration: 6-8 hours

One of the most rewarding days of the southern Kanchenjunga trek is today as we trek to the South Base Camp, also known as the Oktang or Yalung Base Camp. This round trip from Tseram takes us to the high Yalung Valley which is a place of glacial beauty.

The day begins with a warm, delectable breakfast in Tseram followed by the Yalung Glacier upstream. The path rises gently through rock and alpine bushes, later opening on to more glaciated and rougher terrain. As we go higher, the huge peaks of Rathong, Kabru and ultimately Kanchenjunga's south face come into view.

Reaching Oktang, you are greeted by a breathtaking amphitheater of ice and rock. You are here face to face with the massive south face of Mount Kanchenjunga, one of the most spectacular sights in all the Himalayas. On a clear day, the panorama extends to Kabru North and South, Talung and the nearby glacier fields. A chorten and prayer flag at base camp offer a serene moment for reflection in the shadow of the sacred mountain.

Afterward, we return downhill to Tseram which gives you a chance to take in what you may have missed on the way up.

                                Tortong Elevation: 2,995 meters/9,826 feet

                                Trek Duration: 5-6 hours

The walk begins with a gradual descent down the Simbuwa Khola, a river fed by the Yalung Glacier. On descending, air grows thicker and the landscape gives way to rhododendron and pine forest.

The descent can be challenging on the knees as the trail is steep and often damp or muddy, so be careful where you put your feet. Finally, you arrive at Tortong which is a small and peaceful rest stop in a narrow valley along the river. Dense forest and a constant murmur of rushing water surround Tortong, a welcome and calming overnight rest after the high altitude days above.

                                  Yamphudin Elevation: 2,080 meters/6,824 feet

                                  Trek Duration: 7-8 hours

The trek from Tortong to Yamphudin is a scenic switch from the higher slopes of Kanchenjunga towards the verdant lower valleys. It is the most varied terrain segment of the trek that takes you from the rugged valleys to the rich forests of the lower Himalayas.

The trek starts with a moderate track down Simbuwa Khola and along rhododendron, oak and bamboo forests. Insects and wildlife dwelling in this temperate environment and the chirping of birds mesmerize your walk.

You will pass through a sequence of villages en route where you get to enjoy local culture and exchange experiences with friendly locals. Finally, you will reach Yamphudin which is a picturesque village on a hillside with glorious views of surrounding valleys and peaks. The village offers the chance to unwind and revive amidst stunning and serene natural beauty.

It is a well-deserved ending to a fantastic trek amidst some of Nepal's most raw and remote landscapes.

As you drive down into the Ilam lowlands, the road improves and the scenery starts to open up into the tea estates and rolling hills that characterize the area. Besides, isolation, limited facilities and weather uncertainties are some other factors that add to the difficulty level of the trek.

                                            Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Cost

There are packages for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek for various budgets, tastes and travel styles. Whether it is a budget package or a luxury package, the price is determined based on what is included from guide and porter fees to food and lodging.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is Nepal's most off-the-beaten-track and this adventurous hiking lets you deeply explore the eastern Himalayas. As both the North and South Base Camps are included in most itineraries, you will enjoy a wonderful variety of scenery, from lush forests and river valleys up to high-altitude barren landscapes. However, this also adds to the expense.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek cost is more than other Nepal treks as it lies in a restricted area. The cost typically ranges from approximately USD 2,000 to USD 3,500 per person for a standard package. This depends on the itinerary, inclusion and standard of service. The costs also vary with the duration of the trek and the time of year.

Food and Accommodation During the Kanchenjunga Trek

Along the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, you can get simple but pleasant shelter and wholesome meals. Most of the accommodations are modest family-run teahouses scattered across the trails. While less developed than those in more touristic trekking regions like Everest, Annapurna or Langtang, the teahouses provide warm receptions and clean, cozy rooms. There are generally dormitory-style rooms with two or three beds, squat toilets and shared bathrooms. And in a large dining hall, meals are served in a warm communal setting where trekkers can mingle.

The teahouse cuisine is simple yet wholesome, including a combination of Nepalese and international dishes. They are prepared fresh by the in-house staff. Vegetarian, vegan and even specialty meals can be arranged if wanted.

Teahouses and food options decline as you trek deeper into the alpine wilderness areas. The environment is more remote and less habited and the availability of fresh supplies and advanced accommodations are limited. So, be prepared beforehand with necessary snack foods, energy bars and what you may need for a special diet. Being flexible with food choices as well as mentally ready for simple living conditions, you will still be well-fed, well-rested and comfortable even in the remotest reaches of the trek.

                                            Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization

The high altitude trekking above 5,000 meters to the base camp of Mount Kanchenjunga offers an ultimate Himalayan experience. But it also comes with the drawbacks of altitude-related challenges, particularly the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

During your alpine adventure through the snow-covered Himalayas, you will spend the majority of time at a height of above 3,000 meters. You will ascend to both the north and south base camps of the mountain which are at significant altitudes. At the peak point of the trek, 5,143 meters, oxygen greatly decreases and air pressure is considerably thinner. Due to this, you are likely to developaltitude sickness regardless of how healthy, fit or experienced a person you may be.

Common symptoms and signs of altitude sickness are dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, sleeplessness, rapid heartbeat and breathlessness. To avoid these risks, some precautions are necessary, such as:

                                            • Walk slowly and steadily and frequently stop to rest.
                                            • Drink around 4 liters of water per day to maintain good hydration.
                                            • Avoid alcohol and smoking and refrain from packaged snacks.
                                            • Feed your body with fresh, nutritious meals that keep your energy level high.
                                            • Try to get rest and sleep without using sleeping pills.
                                            • Take anti altitude sickness medication to reduce the likelihood of being affected by it.

                                            • Yes, there are basic teahouses and homestays in most villages along the route and facilities are more limited than in the more popular Himalayan adventures of the Everest Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek. They usually have shared toilets and bathrooms, limited access to hot water, simple twin sharing beds and a large communal dining hall.

                                            • The highest point of the Kanchenjunga trek is Pangpema at North Base Camp which is at an altitude of 5,143 meters/16,873 feet. The air is much thinner and the oxygen level is very low here and you will have to acclimatize sufficiently to prevent altitude sickness.

                                            • Food is mainly Nepali fare from the local area including dal bhat (vegetables, lentils, rice), noodles, soup and potatoes. Some teahouses also provide simple Western-style foods like pasta, pancakes and apple pie.

                                            • While the mobile network is available, the signal is weak and patchy for most of the trek. You will perhaps have Wi-Fi at teahouses for a charge but you shouldn't anticipate being online most of the time.

                                            • While not mandatory, tipping your guide and porter is a customary practice which is an expression of gratitude for their dedication, effort and support on the trek. Tipping is especially honored in remote regions like Kanchenjunga where guides and porters go the extra mile to provide you with safety and comfort.

The commonly accepted tip is 10 to 15% of the total cost of the trek.

                                            • Recharging is possible at some teahouses on solar energy or with minimal electricity for an additional fee. Power banks are necessary to carry in order to keep your devices running and functional.

                                            • Yes, the Kanchenjunga region is safe for trekkers in general, especially if going with a guide. Remoteness and altitude are the largest issues and that's why a guide, porter and insurance are necessary.

                                            • While not absolutely necessary, previous hiking experience is well recommended due to the distance, altitude and remoteness of the route. Additionally, you must be physically fit, mentally resilient and prepared for simple living and long days on the trails.

                                            • Yes, these permits are checked at a couple of checkpoints along the trail. You must carry both your Restricted Area Permit and Conservation Area Permit with you at all times. Your guide will usually be assigned for the permit handling process.

                                            • There are no money exchange points and ATMs on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking trail. The adventure takes place in the rural and isolated areas where the banking service has not reached. You will need to exchange enough Nepali rupees in towns prior to the trek to cover all your expenses, including food, laundry, tips, charging devices, buying snacks and so on.

                                            • The weather depends on the season. Spring and autumn feature stable weather and mild temperatures with sunny clear skies and dry trekking paths. In winter, it gets excessively cold, especially at high elevations and even narrow passes of the trail tend to be closed because of snow. Meanwhile, heavy rain and leeches in the lower altitude areas are normal during the monsoon season.

                                            • No, solo trekking is not allowed within the Kanchenjunga region. You must be part of a minimum two-person group organized by a registered trekking agency and guided by a licensed guide due to the region's restricted status.

                                              • Walk slowly, do not overexert and have rest days so your body can recharge.
                                              • Intake plenty of fluids and nutritious food to keep your energy up.
                                              • Pack the required gear and clothing.
                                              • Hire an experienced guide and local porter for security and assistance.
                                              • Ensure that you have insurance that covers emergency helicopter evacuation.
                                              • Be prepared for bare facilities and simple way of living.
                                              • Take note of the weather as it can suddenly change in the mountains.
                                              • Be prepared for cold and potentially snow.
                                              • Walk on the trail that has been designated to avoid getting lost or entering closed-off areas.
                                              • Carry enough Nepali rupees for daily expenses on the trail.
                                              • Do not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.
                                              • If you do not feel well, inform your guide.
