Chulu West Peak Climbing (6419m) is a challenging journey to the summit of the small peak which is one of the most famed among a cluster of other peaks in the vicinity. A part of Damodar Himal, Chulu West Peak lies in close proximity to the Annapurna massif in the Manang District. The twin-peak Chulu East (6429m) lies close to this peak. Both these peaks are classified as trekking peaks; hence, you aren’t required to obtain an expedition permit or any previous climbing experience. This trip through the Annapurna Conservation Area also offers an insight into the culture of the villages beyond the Annapurna massif.

The 20-day affair Chulu West Peak Climbing begins upon your arrival at Kathmandu city followed by sightseeing on the Kathmandu Day Tour, where you’ll get to witness some of the popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath. After preparing for the trip with your climb guide, you’ll drive to Syange or Jagat via Besisahar. You’ll cross some of the traditional Tibetan villages of Dharapani, Chame, and Pisang until Manang. Due to the close proximity to Tibet in the north. You’ll fervently witness the Tibetan lifestyle and culture on this trek. After a brief layover at Manang, the trail continues towards Tilicho Lake (4919m).  One of the highest lakes in the world.

After a brief excursion to the lake, you’ll continue heading towards Chulu West Peak Climbing Base Camp via Yak Kharka. From here, it’s a continuous ascent until High Camp (5100m). From High Camp, you’ll attempt the summit and head back to Base Camp. Once at the summit, you’ll enjoy the majestic Himalayan panorama of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Annapurna massif.  Along with the Chulu East (6429m). You’ll get to cross the highest pass in the region, Thorung La (5416m), and head to the other side of the Mustang district. A short visit to Muktinath temple and Jomsom Bazaar will be another highlight of this trip. You’ll cut the trip short and take a flight back to Pokhara. The trip concedes to Kathmandu.

Itinerary

An Ace Vision Treks member will welcome you upon landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal. Following a short drive, you can rest at the hotel. After you rejuvenate yourself, in the evening, you participate in a welcome dinner hosted by the company. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.

    Your climb guide will assess your health, trek gears, and clothing, and prepare the TIMS Card and climbing permit. In the meantime, you’ll embark on a sightseeing tour of the historical Kathmandu city. Accompanied by an experienced tour guide, you’ll visit a few of the popular UNESCO World Heritage sites around Kathmandu namely Pashupatinath temple, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. If time permits, you'll visit a few more tourist destinations around Kathmandu. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.

      After early morning breakfast, you’ll embark on a road journey to Syange or Jagat lying northwest of Kathmandu. The vast stretch of the journey goes through a serpentine road along the swirling hills, large gorges, and massive river to Besisahar. A small town, Besisahar serves as the gateway to the Annapurna circuit trail. From Besisahar, you’ll drive all the way to Syange village or Jagat depending on the condition of the road. Overnight stay at Jagat.

        After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey. The trail goes through the popular Annapurna Circuit Trail. You’ll enter the Manang district after crossing a large bridge near Tal. The trail advances through barley, rice, and potato fields towardsKhotro. After a short walk, you’ll arrive at Dharapani. Dharapani is one of the biggest villages in the Manang district. Overnight stay at Dharapani.

          You’ll leave Dharapani and advance through the forested ridges towards Chame. The scenic village of Chame contains no more than 1500 inhabitants. The local peak of Lamjung Himal (6983m), Annapurna I (8091m), and Annapurna IV (7525m) will be clearly visible from the village. You can even choose to relax in the small hot spring at Chame. Chame serves as the administrative center of the Manang District. Overnight stay at Chame.

            The trail gradually ascends through the forested path towards the beautiful village of Pisang. You pass through the villages of Telekhu, Bhratang, and Dhikur Pokhari en route arriving at Pisang. It is a small village located in the Marsayangdi River valley directly south of the magnificent Pisang Peak (6091m). From here, you can witness the mesmerizing sights of Annapurna massif and Pisang peak along with numerous Tibetan-styled thatched roof houses and Buddhist monasteries. Overnight stay at Pisang.

              You’ll leave Lower Pisang and head northwest towards Manang village via Upper Pisang, Ngawal, and Ghyaru villages. Due to its close proximity to Tibet in the north, you’ll witness many Tibetan-style houses. The beautiful Annapurna massif will be visible to the northwest almost throughout the trail. You’ll gradually trek through Manang Road and pass through Humde and Braga villages before arriving at Manang. Overnight stay at Manang.

                Today, you’ll spend the day acclimatizing at Manang village. You can choose to make a short hike around the Manang village and explore the traditional settlement. Manang has a history of yak herding and salt-trading with Tibet, today, most people are involved in animal husbandry, and tourism. From Manang, you can catch the magnificent views of Gangapurna, Tilicho, Kangaru, and Throng peaks. Overnight stay at Manang.

                  You’ll leave Manang and head towards Tilicho Base Camp. After crossing the Khangsar Khola, you’ll reach Khangsar village and continue walking past the local monastery to the large grassland. The trail sharply climbs uphill until Tilicho Base Camp. The base camp offers sublime scenery of the Himalayas to the north in the Chulu ranges and Annapurna ranges. Overnight stay at Tilicho Base Camp.

                    Today, you’ll make an excursion to the Tilicho Lake site. Tilicho Lake at 4920m is the highest lake in the world. The trail advances through glacial moraine towards the lake site. You can catch the mesmerizing views of Mt. Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Khangsar Peaks throughout the trail. Tilicho Lake remains frozen most of the time a year. After briefly touring the lake and the surrounding, you’ll retrace your path and trek down to Tilicho Base Camp. Overnight stay at Tilicho Base Camp.

                      You’ll exit the Marsayangdi River Valley and head along with the alpine vegetation towards Khangsar and Ghunsang village. After crossing the wooden bridge, you’ll arrive at Yak Kharka. Yak Kharka is popular for yak pastures. The sight of Annapurna III (7555m) remains visible almost throughout the day at Yak Kharka. Overnight at Yak Kharka.

                        Today, you will trek towards the base camp of Chulu West Peak. It may take several hours as you trek through the icy trails. From Yak Kharka, the trail for the Chulu West Peak Climbing diverts eastward and continues along steep terrains. With the majestic Himalayas making our company, we reach Chulu West Base Camp.

                          From Chulu Base Camp, you’ll continue trekking towards Camp I or High Camp. The route is not technical; hence, you can easily cover it. You’ll cross through numerous crevasses and moraines before arriving at the high camp.Entrails you can enjoy the high-towering peaks of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Gangapurna and Lamjung Himal ranges.Your guide will give out instructions and plans for the upcoming climb. He will also offer tips on how to effectively use your equipment such as crampons, ice-ax, harness, etc.

                            Today, you’ll wake up rather early, and start climbing the summit. You’ll ascent the summit from the western side. After ascending up the main trail through rocky terrain and snow, you will finally arrive at the summit. After exploring the magnificent panorama of the surrounding mountains including Annapurna, Manaslu, and Dhaulagiri you slowly climb down and return to the base camp. Overnight stay at Chulu West Base Camp.

                              You’ll climb down the base camp and retrace your path back to Yak Kharka. The descent will be easier. From Yak Kharka, you’ll take a detour and make your way towards Thorung Phedi lying at the foot of Thorung La Pass. The area resembles more of a desolate landscape with snow and less vegetation. You’ll walk along the cold currents of the Marshyangdi River and arrive at Thorung Phedi.

                                Today you’ll make a head start and ascent the Thorung La Pass via Thorung La (5416 m). It’s essential to cross Thorung La Pass before the late noon mainly because the weather worsens in the latter part of the day. In addition, there aren’t any lodges available at the top of the pass. As you advance to the top, you’ll encounter a thick snow path. Once at the top, you will witness the magnificent panorama of majestic peaks lying entirely inside Tibet. As you descend along the downhill trail you’ll encounter a more desert-like landscape that is endemic to the Mustang district. The day ends at Muktinath, a popular pilgrimage site for both the Hindu and Buddhist adherents. Overnight stay at Muktinath.

                                  You’ll visit the holy temple of Muktinath in the morning. The pilgrims indulge in the circumambulation of the temple while taking shower in the 108 stone taps. After exploring the temple, you’ll catch a commute and drive down to Jomsom Bazaar. The trail descends along a road through the Kali Gandaki valley. You can enjoy the locally produced Apple brandy called ‘Marpha’ and relish the local Thakali cuisine at Jomsom. Overnight stay at Jomsom.

                                    After enjoying a lavish breakfast at Jomsom, you catch the flight back to Pokhara. The trans-Himalayan flight takes you over the Annapurna massif while offering a scenic aerial view of the mountains and dense forests inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. Once at Pokhara, you can choose to explore the touristic city. Pokhara is gifted with some serene tourist landmarks such as Davis falls, Mahendra cave, Peace Pagoda, and Phewa Lake. Overnight stay at Pokhara.

                                      You’ll bid adieu to Pokhara and embark on a road journey to Kathmandu. The 6-7hr ride traverses across the hills, rivers, towns, and forests of mid-western Nepal back to Kathmandu city. You can also briefly catch the panoramic view of Machhapuchhre (6997m) and Annapurna I (8091m) while departing. Overstay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
