Trekking in Nepal

Trekking in Nepal with altitude as high as 8,848 m. and as low as 70m, diversity in both nature and culture are prevalent all over Nepal. As such, trekking is the most famous model of travel for tourists visiting the country. It is the combination of cultural authenticity and the natural beauty of Nepal which makes a difference in the trekking experience. This involves walking over narrow rocky trails while witnessing the views of high mountains, exotic species, small villages, and cultural sites.

There are two ways to Trekking in Nepal: the 'Teahouse trek and the Camping trek'. Teahouse treks are those where travelers rest at teahouses and lodges on the trails. Teahouses are common in the entire trekking destinations with some exceptions where geography and climate are extreme. They offer meals and extra facilities like electricity and hot water along with beds to sleep in for an overnight stay. Whereas camping treks are usually done on off-beaten paths.

Everything from the tent, food, fuel, and trekking gear is organized by a team of guides, cooks, and porters. In these treks, the trekkers get a taste of the most authentic nature during their walks and overnight stays. As such, both the treks involve trekking for 7 to 8 hours a day on average which can vary on the destination and route taken. While teahouse treks are more popular, camping treks capture the attention of avid trekkers who prefer the company of nature above others. Also, both the treks entertain the participants with rest stops on multiple occasions and detours as well.

Another fact that trekkers must be aware of is that the treks in Nepal are divided on the basis of regions and each region has its own list of viable trekking packages. Among a diverse array of treks to choose from, some of the prominent and most preferred ones are:

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is common as the altitude rises above 3000m. The level of oxygen declines at a higher altitude which leads to high metabolism and, as a result, trekkers experience a headache, nausea, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and, if not taken care of, fatal cases arise as well. The only way to cure this is to descend to a lower altitude and opt for proper treatment. So, better listen to the body and go slow. Drink lots of fluids and eat food for energy. Some medications do help with symptoms but consult a doctor before use.

Food and Accommodation

Both the teahouse and camping trek provides 3 meals a day. The food is basic stable Dal and Bhat’. Although, light snacks can be taken while trekking. The accommodation is basic, a room with a double bed, however, that can vary as the altitude increases. As for toilets, the cities offer normal toilets which can change to squat types as the trek gains altitude. All in all, you will get comfortable services of food and accommodation on any trek.
